Metz 15 MS-1 Digital Macro Slave Ringflash: Verdict
The Metz 15 MS-1 is a very well designed flash unit, offering a decent solution for macro photographers and possibly even for some people taking portraits. The unit is limited with pro lenses due to the inability to mount it on a 77mm diameter lens.
The fact it can be used across different camera systems and fits in seamlessly with the wireless flash systems of many cameras opens a raft of creative opportunities, putting you in control of your lighting.

  • Metz 15 MS-1 Digital Macro Slave Ringflash: Plus points
    Build quality
    Simple to set-up and use
Integrates perfectly with existing wireless systems and works well in multi-flash set ups

OUR VERDICT: Freedom from wires and bulky hotshoe units makes the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 very convenient, especially for those photographers who have cameras from mor than one manufacturer. It is extremely easy to set up and the ability to vary the light output on th two sides means it is possible to control the shadows.

Metz 15 MS-1 Digital RIngflash

There have been a number of macro flash models over the years, but lately big changes in technology. The introduction of wireless flash functions in modern DSLRs has now opened the door for Metz to create a world first in a wireless macro flash. Not only is the 15 MS-1 wireless, it also has a clever design that includes two individually controllable and swiveling reflectors. Each of these can be moved through 20 degrees for much more accurate light distribution.
It works by utilising the cameras's built in systems designed to provide off-camera flash. It's a universal product, so simply set the flash to your brand of DSLR, and then use your pop-up flash as a master to trigger the macro flash. To stop the built-in flash affecting the lighting ont he subject, a neat little IR flash cover clip allows the infrared light through to trigger the 15 MS-1. For Canon you do need a Canon Speedlight flashgun, as there is no in-camera workless flash facility to fire the MS-1. The flash can also be used via a sync cable or by slave firing.
